Ballintoy Harbour

Accessed via a steep and winding road is Ballintoy Harbour, known as the raised beach. Wildlife in the area include various birds of prey and even dolphins. The harbour itself is spectacular on a windy day when large waves violently crash against the rugged rock outcrops.

The harbour is best known as a filming location for the TV show 'Game of Thrones'. Most of the scenes of the Iron Islands were filmed here. Northern Ireland was the primary filming location for the Westeros scenes in 'Game of Thrones', apart from scenes north of the wall which was primarily shot in Iceland.

From the harbour one can see across to Larrybane Quarry, another 'Game of Thrones' filming location. On a clear day it is possibly to see the Islay Islands of Scotland, famous for their scotch. One can also see Rathlin Island, the site of the first ever viking raid on Ireland as well as Sheep Island.

"Just off the harbour is Sheep Island, legend has it that vikings told the locals that if they put all their sheep on the island for the vikings then their lives would be spared. Although the locals obliged the vikings killed them anyway..."
